Assessment and Solution of Pipework vibration Problems

Client International Oil and Gas Operator
Location North Sea

Description

  • Conducted velocity-vs-frequency measurements of vibrating features to assess the criticality of the vibrations as per the UK Energy Institute Guidelines for the Avoidance of Vibration Induced Fatigue Failures (AVIFF).
  • Conducted strain gauge measurements to calculate the stresses and remaining fatigue life for the vibration features that exceeded the AVIFF concern and problem zone criteria.
  • Conducted surface crack detection examination to check for any vibration induced cracks for the features that exceeded the AVIFF concern and problem zone criteria to ensure that they are safe to remain in service until the required pipework modifications are implemented.
  • Specified the required pipework/pipe support modifications to mitigate the vibration problems.
  • Conducted CAESAR II piping stress analysis to assess the impact of the pipework modifications on the stress and flexibility of the pipework.

Piping Repairs Using Engineered Composite Wraps Designed to ISO 24817 or ASME PCC-2

Client International Oil and Gas Operator
Location North Sea
Description We consider the following in the design and construction of Engineered Composite Wraps:
  • Design life, design pressure and maximum and minimum design temperatures.
  • Surface preparation of pipe.
  • Installation temperature and curing requirements (elevated temperature curing).
  • Design basis (substrate allowable stress, repair laminate allowable strains, and through wall defects).
  • Defect size and depth.
  • Pipe internal corrosion.
  • Calculations of repair thickness, repair axial extent and repair taper length.
  • Disbonding forces due to differential thermal expansion between the pipe material and repair laminate material.
  • Cure and post cure testing (hardness tests and/or time-temperature measurements).
  • Design factors for piping system components (bends, tees, flanges and reducers).
  • Piping loads (axial, bending, shear and torsion).
